"Phenomenal shop - absolute treasure trove - could have bought it all - such good taste such good value. Wonderful authentic military jackets and gorgeous vintage dresses in great condition (the 1950s cocktail dress was amazing) plus the lady at the till was lovely!"
We Love All Things Vintage!
"The reality of No. 1 Woolmarket is the culmination of a lifetime spent buying using and loving ‘old’ things. I was born at a time when furniture was passed down in the family, not bought, I don’t think I ever visited a furniture shop as a child. I did go to general auctions with my Dad and l remember the thrill of watching the auctioneer speeding through the lots.
When I left home and moved into my own flat I furnished it entirely with second hand and pass-me-downs. I married, moved house, and started a family. Money was very scarce and Phillip and I would buy redundant office furniture from Exchange and Mart and sell it to local businesses to make ends meet. Moving house in the eighties to a rambling four storey house, we again furnished it with other peoples’ ‘no longer needed’ furniture. We then had a fledgling business buying at auctions and selling at an antique market. Very small profits.
Another house move brought us to Northumberland, an old house to renovate and, with the boys having left home, time to indulge in our joint enthusiasm. We rediscovered the joy of auctions and house sales and once more started trading in a small way at a local vintage/antiques outlet. We traded up several times to different markets offering more space and better footfall until we found ourselves in the tricky position of having a lot of stock and having to make a hasty exit from the premises we were in. Storage units were a life saver.
At this point we made the momentous decision to be our own masters and became the proud and excited owners of ‘No. 1 Woolmarket’. We took several months to set up the shop and create the atmosphere that we hoped would attract people. In this we were helped by our good friends Rhona and Kerry, aka RK Retro. The shop took off from day one and grows in popularity all the time. Despite Covid and the loss of confidence on the High Street we are still blooming and still going from strength to strength.
Whilst we would not claim this ourselves, one recent customer said, ‘this is the best vintage shop in the world’.
Good to have something to aim for."

"Absolutely love a vintage/antique find found this hand tooled mid century leather clutch and beautiful mother of pearl set in silver ring while in Berwick. Will definitely be back to the seaside to hunt for more treasure."
Berwick-upon-Tweed
As the most Northerly town in England Berwick-upon-Tweed's location is one of unique and fascinating historical importance. Only a stone's throw from the Scottish Border, our town changed hands 13 times during 300 years of turbulent Border wars.
With its famous Elizabethan Walls, three iconic bridges, rich cultural life, wildlife, and sandy beaches, Berwick is a popular destination for visitors from all over the world who enjoy its rich heritage and natural beauty.
You will find our shop located "within the walls" which completely encircle the town. A walk of the Elizabethan Walls is the best way to experience Berwick-upon-Tweed, offering stunning views of the three bridges across the River Tweed, handsome Georgian buildings on the waterfront, and down the coast towards the castles of Bamburgh and Lindisfarne.
We look forward to welcoming you!
